June: from Blossom to Fruit

End of May, beginning of June is a very exciting time in the olive groves. It is when the  blossom, through mostly wind pollination, starts to germinate and we can already see the tiny olives being formed. After a couple of weeks when clouds of golden yellow dust could be seen in the fields, the magic has happened and we can start to see the cardamom seed size olives, the promise of the new harvest. I still see my dad returning from the olive trees and hear him announcing this to my mother every year, always with the same excitement: “¡Maria Cruz, ya se ve el cañamón!” (We can already see the new fruit!)

I have felt the same excitement in our orchard manager, my cousin Alberto’s messages when he has sent me this year’s photos. All he had to write was: “¡Ya se ve!” (We can already see it!) and I knew what he meant.

Follow the journey of the olive from blossom to oil in the following months with Alberto’s stories from the fields.
